About this book

Thomas Bernhard recalls his friendship with Paul Wittgenstein, nephew of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Their bond begins when Bernhard is treated for lung disease and Paul is confined in a nearby psychiatric hospital. Tenderer than much of Bernhard’s work but no less unsparing, this memoir moves through illness, music, class and the failures of families and institutions, preserving a brilliant, difficult friend whom society preferred to treat as an embarrassment. Originally written in German, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Samir Grees.
