About this book

This art book brings together a selection of Saad Hajo’s sharply satirical cartoons of Bashar al-Assad, portrayed as an ‘elected’ president who inherited a republic from his father. Hajo had resolved to draw Assad every day—whether or not the drawing was published—until the regime fell. The resulting sequence is both a sustained act of political dissent and a visual chronicle of authoritarian power, propaganda and the persistence of ridicule under repression.
