About this book

In the fictional republic of Santa Fe de Tierra Firme, the dictator Santos Banderas orders the secret arrest of a colonel he suspects of conspiracy. Warned in time, the officer escapes and joins a growing revolt. Ramón María del Valle-Inclán’s landmark esperpento distorts language and character to reveal the grotesque machinery of tyranny, creating one of the foundational literary portraits of the Latin American dictator. Originally written in Spanish as “Tirano Banderas: Novela de Tierra Caliente”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Ali Ibrahim Ashqar.
