About this book

Sophia, a fierce and curious child, spends the summer with her grandmother on a small island after her mother’s death. They explore the shore, watch birds, swim in dangerous water, sleep in tents and build miniature worlds, while speaking frankly about God, death and independence. Tove Jansson’s beloved novel unfolds in brief, luminous episodes, capturing the intimacy between childhood and old age without sentimentality and the island’s shifting balance of safety and wildness. Originally written in Finnish as “Sommarboken”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Samir Taher.
