About this book

Returning to the island, Manuel investigates the death of the man who adopted him and encounters the woman transformed by that absent figure. Matute’s layered voices explore memory, sacrifice and the intimate consequences of the Spanish Civil War. Originally written in Spanish as “Los soldados lloran de noche”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Ali Ibrahim Ashqar.
