About this book

Larsen returns to Santa María to manage a shipyard that is already collapsing. He pursues the owner’s daughter and the promise of inheritance while sustaining the fiction that the business can be revived. Onetti’s bleakly comic novel explores solitude, failure and the struggle for meaning in a world built on pretence. Originally written in Spanish as “El astillero”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Bassām al-Bazzāz.
