About this book

Since discovering burnt bones at Tell al-Mikrab, the poor labourer Mahdi believes misfortune is pursuing him. An Egyptian archaeological team recruits him and uncovers the treasure foretold by village elders, but Mahdi’s luck soon leads him to prison and into the orbit of Khalila, whose fate will alter his own. Against the Egyptian army’s intervention in Yemen and the republican–royalist war, Bassam Shamseldin combines historical adventure, prophecy and a gripping personal story.
