About this book

The village celebrates when Meka, an elderly Cameroonian who gave land to the church and lost two sons in colonial wars, is chosen to receive a medal from the French authorities. The ceremony’s promises of honour soon collapse into humiliation. Ferdinand Oyono’s concise, bitterly comic novel exposes the racism and hypocrisy of colonial rule, showing how official recognition becomes another instrument for keeping the colonised subject in his assigned place. Originally written in French as “The Old Man And The Medal”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Mamdouh Adwan.
