About this book

In the nineteenth century, the Vatican considers canonising Christopher Columbus for expanding the world available to Christianity. The debate gathers supporters, opponents, historical figures and invisible ghosts, while Columbus’s own voice complicates the heroic record. Beginning from an actual campaign for beatification, Alejo Carpentier travels across centuries in a witty, formally daring novel that dismantles imperial myth and stages history as a contest between confession, institution and legend. Originally written in Spanish as “El arpa y la sombra”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Ali Ibrahim Ashqar.
