About this book

After revolutionary zealots burn the family’s books, instruments and forbidden objects, Hushang leaves Tehran with his wife, children and the ghost of a daughter, hoping to protect their intellectual freedom in a remote village. The violence of post-revolutionary Iran follows them. Narrated from beyond death and alive with Persian myth, spirits and magical transformation, Shokoofeh Azar’s novel tells of a family trying to preserve imagination under a regime determined to police both life and memory. Originally written in Persian, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Gassan Hamdan.
