About this book

‘Astonishment is a treasure hidden in Aleppo,’ one character says. Maha Hassan retrieves that treasure through memory, rebuilding the city’s old popular quarters, rituals, modest dreams and intimate lives before war destroyed them. Each chapter takes its title from an Arabic or international novel, turning literature itself into a map of childhood, love and loss. The District of Astonishment is both an affectionate portrait of Aleppo and an inquiry into what fiction can preserve when a city becomes unreachable.
