About this book

What is war without chants, aircraft, screams and the sounds of torture? Rebir Yousef imagines the Syrian world with its audio track removed, following a father who raises his deaf son alone. Through shifting narrative forms, the novel explores the complex bond between father and child—love, resentment, fear, dependence and the desire for freedom—while sound and silence acquire political as well as emotional meaning. The Deaf Disciple is an unusual, deeply sensory account of family life inside catastrophe.
