Three Little Stories About Toys

Where to buy
A university professor sees a museum portrait whose subject looks uncannily like his father. The resemblance leads him towards a descendant of the painted man and into a maze where waking life, dreams and inherited stories continually exchange places. José María Merino’s novel follows memory as it produces doubles, hidden genealogies and alternative selves, gradually drawing both protagonist and reader towards a dark shore where identity can no longer be treated as singular or secure. Originally written in Spanish as “La Orilla Oscura”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Ali Ibrahim Ashqar.
