About this book

In late seventeenth-century Cairo, French herbal physician Jean-Baptiste Poncet is drawn into a secret embassy from Louis XIV to the emperor of Abyssinia. The journey crosses deserts, religious rivalries and competing imperial ambitions, while a love story raises the stakes of return. Jean-Christophe Rufin transforms a remarkable diplomatic episode into a sweeping adventure about medicine, faith and the encounter between Europe, the Ottoman world and Africa. Originally written in French as “L'Abyssin”, this is the Arabic edition published by Mamdouh Adwan Publishing House.
