About this book

Born into a Brahmin family, Siddhartha abandons privilege in search of an experience no teaching can provide. He passes through asceticism, sensual wealth, despair and finally the patient instruction of a river. Hermann Hesse’s lucid philosophical novel follows a life shaped by friendship, desire, loss and renewal, proposing that wisdom cannot simply be transmitted: it must be lived until the apparent divisions between self and world begin to dissolve. Originally written in German as “Siddhartha”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Mamdouh Adwan.
