Three Little Stories About Toys

Children look out for the first time onto the adult world during and after the Spanish Civil War. Games, hunger, drink, song and the sound of bombs become lessons in survival, while absent fathers and early betrayals mark the border between innocence and experience. Jesús Fernández Santos writes with visual economy and compassion, assembling a sequence of stories in which childhood does not stand outside history but receives its violence directly. Originally written in Spanish as “Cabeza rapada”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Bassām al-Bazzāz.
