About this book

Through hundreds of interviews, Svetlana Alexievich records the voices of people who lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union and the arrival of a new Russia. Former believers, dissidents, soldiers, mothers and young people speak of ideals, repression, poverty, freedom and the difficulty of becoming someone else after an entire system disappears. Secondhand Time is an oral history of political transformation as experienced in kitchens, prisons, wars and private memory. Originally written in Russian, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by ʿUyūn al-Sūd, Nizār.
