About this book

Under the identity of a mysterious Orientalist, a young American travels through Jabal al-Arab and on to Latakia, following the threads of an extraordinary story he has partly entered himself. Told through notebooks and oral testimony, the novel draws on the legends, songs and poems of southern Syria. Against a landscape marked by class hierarchy and restrictive custom, a love story becomes an act of danger, while two riders attempt to conquer fear through song.
