About this book

During his adolescence in Tizi Rached, Algeria, the Syrian boy Talal becomes absorbed in the intertwined stories of two Amazigh sisters. Their lives follow him across Syria, Lebanon, Algeria and France, binding private memory to the larger movements of modern Arab history. Through migrations, cities, villages and the symbolism of women’s traditional dress, Walid Shoaib tells a coming-of-age story about inherited narratives, cultural encounter and the unexpected ways another person’s past can become part of one’s own.
