About this book

Set at the collapse of Ottoman rule and on the eve of the First World War, My Enemies brings together Jamal Pasha, his Jewish lover Sarah, spies, rough soldiers and ambitious officers. Around them, Arab characters struggle with the bitterness of a vanishing past while imperial projects attempt to push them outside their own land, history and age. Mamdouh Adwan’s historical novel turns the end of an empire into a dense drama of desire, betrayal and competing memories.
