Using diminutives to strip the dictator of grandeur, Arrabal moves from Stalin’s famous moustache to the women, spies, followers and victims surrounding him. Biography, political history and literary provocation combine in a sustained act of desacralisation, reducing the monumental leader to a culpable child who must finally be spoken to without fear. Originally written in Spanish as “Carta a stalin”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Amal Fares.
