About this book

Brothers Helmi and Diaa work in a car-repair shop while their mother earns a living as a nightclub dancer. Each day after she leaves, one brother puts on her clothes and reenacts the same authority she exercises over them. Inspired by Jean Genet’s The Maids and set in a poor post-war Damascus neighbourhood, Zein Saleh’s play uses role-play and repetition to examine power, family, gender and the dilemmas facing a generation shaped by war and displacement.
