About this book

Jakob von Gunten enrols in the Benjamenta Institute, a school that trains young men to become obedient servants. He records monotonous lessons, fellow students and the strange brother and sister who run the institution, while insisting on his desire to become ‘a charming, utterly spherical zero’. Robert Walser’s miniature masterpiece turns submission into a paradoxical experiment in freedom, balancing irony, tenderness and rebellion in one of modern literature’s most distinctive diaries. Originally written in German as “Jakob von Gunten”, this is the Arabic edition published by Mamdouh Adwan Publishing House.
