About this book

Filmmaker Salman visits Syria’s Dead Cities to document the remains of ancient civilisations. In the house of a local notable, he finds a painting of a wounded gazelle signed by his mother, Fatima. The owner begins proposing possible scripts, each revealing another hidden version of her life. Khairy Alzahaby moves across time and between voices, turning archaeological ruins into a labyrinth of maternal memory and asking whether a person can ever know more than one face of those closest to them.
