About this book

A forged decree posted on a cathedral door orders the public display of Paraguay’s dictator after his death. Through the voice of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, Roa Bastos creates a formally daring meditation on dictatorship, language, history and the fantasy of absolute authority. Originally written in Spanish as “Yo el Supremo”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Bassām al-Bazzāz.
