About this book

After twenty years in the mounted gendarmerie, Salem returns to his family in Deir al-Qarn with the only companion who stayed beside him throughout his service: his horse. The five children and their mother respond differently to the unexpected new member of the household, and their interwoven voices generate stories, tensions and private worlds. Mamduh Azzam’s warm, formally inventive family novel moves between security and fear, obedience and refusal, until freedom writes the final chapter.
