About this book

Two narratives, separated by generations, connect the dispossession of Saharan nomads with the life of Lalla, a young woman growing up on the margins of a Moroccan city. Le Clézio’s luminous novel contrasts exile and exploitation with the desert’s vastness, memory and spiritual freedom. Originally written in French as “Désert”, the work appears here in an Arabic translation by Lina Badr.
