About this book

Moving between Aleppo’s old markets and Berlin’s bars, Nihad Sirees’s protagonist tries to escape a failed love affair through other people’s stories and Germany’s wartime history. Images, maps and Otto Dix’s paintings mingle with memories of destruction in Syria, as East and West Berlin echo divided Aleppo. Fluidly blending documentation with the fantastic, Berlin Papers asks whether a person can flee one war by immersing himself in the traces of another—and what kind of beginning remains possible afterwards.
