About this book

Selected to introduce a broad readership to Mamdouh Adwan’s poetic voice, this anthology favours shorter and medium-length poems in order to represent the range of his work. Across them emerges a poet at once angry and tender, aligned with the poor, resistant to pretension and attentive to the smallest signs of life. An Outsider Before His Time restores the profile of a major modern Syrian poet whose moral and aesthetic independence kept him deliberately at the edge.
