About this book

Sent to America after a scandal in Europe, young Karl Rossmann moves through hotels, offices, theatres and unstable employments in a modern industrial world that continually absorbs and expels its workers. Franz Kafka’s unfinished novel observes labour, bureaucracy and hierarchy with comic precision, allowing every apparent opportunity to become another form of dependence. Amerika presents the New World as an immense system whose promise of reinvention is inseparable from bewilderment and loss. Originally written in German as “Amerika”, this is the Arabic edition published by Mamdouh Adwan Publishing House.
