About this book

Released from prison with a severed earlobe, a transparent bag and a discharge paper, Ezz al-Din Darwish searches for the mother, brother and fiancée he imagined dead. Freedom in this Syrian dystopia proves more complicated than captivity: two and a half years of revolution and war have altered every person, house and city he knew. A tense literary document of Syria’s early years of upheaval, the novel asks what survival can mean when an entire world is falling apart.
