About this book

Mamdouh Adwan returns to al-Mutanabbi not to repeat a conventional literary biography, but to read the celebrated tenth-century poet as a dramatic character. Drawing on the tensions, ambitions and contradictions of his life and poetry, Adwan asks what the tools of theatre can reveal about a figure claimed by admirers and critics for centuries. The study offers a playwright-poet’s distinctive encounter with one of Arabic literature’s most powerful and contested personalities.
