About this book

Khalifa al-Khader, winner of the 2017 Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press, writes from inside the fear he experienced in ISIS prisons in al-Bab. He escaped, then later returned voluntarily after ISIS was expelled from the city, confronting the physical space and its memories. Al-Kana’is does not describe the organisation from a safe distance: its stories come from ‘the belly of the beast’, preserving what the writer saw, heard and survived.
