About this book

A newborn slips from the midwife’s hands and resists every attempt to catch him until a retired policeman applies his old hunting skills. From this startling opening, Islam Abu Shakir builds a world where strict physical reality mixes with flight, myth and dark comedy. Wings appear and disappear under the threat of scissors, knives and guns, while howls gather in the background. Al-Awoon is an allegorical novel about difference, coercion and the forces determined to cut freedom down to size.
