About this book

A Shelter for Absence is a place built from words, inhabited by figures who belong as much to their imaginations as to any stable reality. Mansúra Izz ad-Dín’s linked stories move through ruined cities, occult signs, doubt and shifting identities, never allowing the reader to decide whether one character is another’s hallucination. Drawing material from real destruction while remaining committed to the fantastic, the collection explores how writers invent selves and worlds from the wreckage of events.
