About this book

From Damascus neighbourhoods and Saydnaya to Istanbul, tailor Ahmad Aswad tells his life story at the sewing machine: first love, travel and the planning of a murder. In a voice at once deadpan, ironic and emotionally charged, Waseem Alsharqi enters overlooked worlds of pre-2011 Syria—border smugglers, garment workers, bodybuilders and the patrons of old Damascus bars. A Black Novel follows the impulses that direct marginal lives and searches for the source of the darkness that settles inside them.
